Rio Pearlstein is a 17-year-old golfer at Milton Academy in Massachusetts and has been a rising star in youth golf since he was 11. Two years ago, he was his region's player of the year.
That was the same year he came out as a trans boy while pushing through being at the top of his game, and continuing to press toward a goals of playing golf in college which has been his dream.
It is a dream that has him willing to put his other life goal on hold for in a sense. He is delaying the next stage of transition to reach that summit, with all the difficulties therein. Karleigh Webb sat down with this young talent to look at navigating sport as a trans boy playing a girls team, navigating being trans in a sporting structure that is cis-centered, and finding the love of the game and competition through it all.
