But modern forms of deportation cannot take place without diplomatic arrangements and internationally agreed upon practices for removing people from within the borders of a country. In this episode, we speak to Torrie Hester, author of a new book entitled Deportation: the Origins of U.S. Policy, about the international regime that facilitated the rise of US deportation practices from the late 19th century onward.
