It is recognised that there is an enormous barrier to meeting the health care needs of LGBTQ communities. There are systemic failings in place and the health inequalities, that the LGBTQ community experience has a very real impact on their health trajectories. 

 

The LGBTQ plus community has an increased prevalence of certain conditions like PTSD to post-traumatic stress disorder which can cause an enormous impact on the brain and the way that the brain develops as a child who is perhaps growing up. 

 

Research over time shows that microaggressions do actually have an impact on somebody's health experience. PTSD is widely accepted as an illness that is predisposed to developing persistent pain or developing ongoing pain and we know that the LGBTQ plus community are at an increased risk of PTSD.

 

Statistically, there are an enormous amount of, um, LGBTQ plus people in the UK who aren't seen by any healthcare professionals. It’s estimated that 20% of LGBTQ plus do not have any healthcare professionals aware of their sexual orientation.
