Everyday is an opportunity to stick to your good habits. Or if you have not-so-good ones, a chance to change them. Our featured guest in this episode provides us with a comprehensive toolkit to smash our bad habits.

In this installment of our podcast, One Year No Beer Co-Founder Ruari Fairbairns talks to Gretchen Rubin. Gretchen is the author of several bestselling books that include the blockbusters Better Than Before, The Happiness Project and Happier at Home. Her books have sold more than two million copies worldwide, in more than thirty languages. She also hosts an award-winning weekly podcast called Happier with Gretchen Rubin. She’s been interviewed by Oprah, has walked arm-in-arm with the Dalai Lama, and is considered as one of the “22 Brilliant Thinkers Everyone Should Follow on Twitter” by Business Insider.

The transition

Gretchen relates in this episode that she was starting her career in law, clerking for the former Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, when she realized she wanted to be a writer. She admits that writing started as a hobby for her and, lucky for us, it developed into a flourishing full-time job.

On cultivating a habit of writing, she advises, “You actually have to be writing, not just thinking it.” She also streamlines that having a subject is the most important thing: “You cannot be a writer if you cannot figure out what you want to write about.”

‘I want to be happy’

Gretchen professes here that when she was finishing one of her biographies, she thought, “What do I want from life, anyway?” Well, she wanted to be happy, accordingly. So she decided to do The Happiness Project, and found a world of happiness, by changing for the better through habits.

Changing habits

If the key to happiness is changing through habits, then it’s crucial to know how we can change them. Gretchen’s most recent masterpiece of a book, Better Than Before, delivers answers to this conundrum.

Listen to the podcast as Gretchen shares some of the most insightful strategies, backed by research, to make or break habits. She also gives invaluable advice here on leading an alcohol free lifestyle.
