This week, Mayor Eric Adams announced a new directive that would allow the NYPD to involuntarily hospitalize mentally ill people on the city’s subways and streets. The initiative immediately met with strong criticism from advocates for the homeless and mental health experts. NY1’s Zack Fink, Courtney Gross and Kelly Mena weigh in on the new policy and discuss how it can be difficult to determine whether a person’s mental illness prevents them from meeting their own basic needs.
Additionally, Brooklyn is officially in the U.S. House. Brooklyn native Hakeem Jeffries ran unopposed to replace Rep. Nancy Pelosi as the top Democrat in the U.S. House and became the first Black lawmaker to lead a party in Congress. Brooklyn will continue to see its power grow as Brooklynite Chuck Schumer is already the Democratic leader in the Senate. The team discussed what this means for Brooklyn and New York City as a whole.
