Sciatica and piriformis syndrome are two distinct conditions that can cause similar symptoms, especially pain radiating down the leg. However, they have different underlying causes.
Sciatica is not a condition itself but a symptom of an underlying problem. It occurs when the sciatic nerve, which is the longest nerve in the body, gets compressed or irritated. The most common cause of sciatica is a herniated or bulging disc in the lumbar spine, which puts pressure on the sciatic nerve.
Piriformis syndrome occurs when the piriformis muscle, located deep in the buttocks, becomes tight or spasms, compressing or irritating the nearby sciatic nerve. In this case, the piriformis muscle itself is the source of the problem, rather than a herniated disc or other spinal issue.
