Chronicling immigrant stories, How the media portrays Somalis, Mainstream news sources for the diaspora | #NomadicHustle 10 w/ Mukhtar Ibrahim, founder of Sahan Journal

On the 10th episode of #NomadicHustle - I sit with Mukhtar Ibrahim of Sahan Journal to discuss how he got into journalism, the way Somalis are portrayed in the media, creating quality news outlets for immigrant communities, and much more!

Mukhtar M. Ibrahim is the founder, editor and executive director of Sahan Journal, a nonprofit news organization dedicated to chronicling the struggles, successes and transformations of Minnesota’s immigrant and refugee communities.

He previously worked as a staff writer for the Star Tribune and Minnesota Public Radio News. He has also written for the St. Paul Pioneer Press, Al Jazeera English, BuzzFeed News and the Wisconsin Center for Investigative Journalism.

Mukhtar is among the first of his generation's professional, accomplished journalists of Somali descent in Minnesota and in the country. His leadership has been recognized with many awards and accomplishments and is sought-after speaker and panelist at leading institutions, organizations and conferences around the United States.

He was a recipient of the prestigious leadership fellowship from the St. Paul-based Bush Foundation, a "Great Immigrant" award from the Carnegie Corporation of New York, Twin Cities Business Magazine’s 100 People to Know (2019), Islamic Resource Group's "Building Bridges Award in Media" (2019), and "Above the Fold" award, which honors alumni of the University of Minnesota Hubbard School of Journalism & Mass Communication under the age of 40 who have made exceptional contributions to their fields.

About Nomadic Hustle:

Historically known as a nomadic people, the Somali diaspora's presence can be felt in nearly every country and region of the world. Often pioneering as the first generation in their families to be successful in their education and careers, the process in which it takes to break those barriers is rarely highlighted. This podcast aims to celebrate and highlight Somali excellence while shedding light on the countless success stories within our community both on a local and global scale. Focusing on inspiring the younger generation is the goal, and facilitating conversations on common issues and solutions that pertain to the Somali diaspora experience will help us stay connected as a people.

Nomadic Hustle: Shedding light on our stories while engaging in conversation to enlighten our youth and inspire our community to grow.
