Newsies Minute

123 episodes - English - Latest episode: over 3 years ago - ★★★★ - 15 ratings

In 1992, the lots of Disney studios echoed with the voices of Newsies. Peddlin' the songs of Alan Menken, Jack Feldman, and other giants of the movie musical world. On every corner, you saw 'em carryin' the banner, bringing you the news one song at a time. Poor dancers and singers, the newsies were an athletic army, without a leader, except for Kenny Ortega, the director, who also was totally their leader. Until one day, none of that changed, except that the movie was done and you could go watch it.

And now, we're here to talk to you about it.

End Credits Livestream

December 18, 2020 17:00 - 118 MB

Hey! Well....um...haha here's the recording of the livestream that we did to cover the last couple seconds of the movie and the end credits. There are so many topics covered. Who wrote the lyrics? What of ceiling fans? Is there any fanfiction that Erin (who claims she didn't write it) could read on the air, what did we get each other for Christmas, an FMK, and like 3 announcements of things that are either well-established or even over by now. So....yeah! We had a great time on this show. Don...

Black Lives Matter

June 05, 2020 18:00 - 18.2 MB

Why is this audio file so long? The time from the last word of the statement to the last second of the track totals 8 minutes and 46 seconds. 8 minutes and 46 seconds doesn't sound like a long time until you are confronted with just how long it can drag on. 8 minutes and 46 seconds is how long it took to end George Floyd's life [https://www.8m46s.com]. At the Scavengers Network, we support the nationwide protests against police brutality; because Black Lives Matter. It is not enough to simply...

Michael John Hughes Interview!

December 15, 2019 18:24 - 31 MB

"Wait," you say. "I though Newsies Minute was over! They finished the movie! They did a whole livestream about it!" Well, that's true. But we weren't *entirely* done. We had one more interview to do. We got the chance to sit down with Michael John Hughes, who plays Romeo and Spot in the Arena Stage production of Newsies: The Musical: The Stage Version, and have a really interesting conversation about what it's like to come into the Newsies fandom from the other direction. Michael John is ...

Minute 116: Newsie Style

December 09, 2019 11:00 - 10.9 MB

In this, the final minute of the podcast proper (join us tomorrow night for the livestream where we'll cover the rest!), James's voice sounds like absolute trash. Pointy Pokey takes Jack's stuff back to the Boarding House, maybe?, Jack sees Skittery, David is a Newsie now (you can tell by the hat), Crutchie misunderstands, Sarah gets some, An Erin Mystery is Solved, and the process of what happens when a Newsie kisses someone is finally explained, James ruins the whole podcast and then he mak...

Michael Goorjian Interview!

December 08, 2019 19:25 - 29.8 MB

A few months ago, we had the amazing opportunity to sit down with Michael Goorjian, who played Skittery in Newsies, and pick his brain about hanging out on set, creating character backstory, and making movies that aren't Newsies...technically. The audio on this one is a little bit rough, but the conversation is worth it. Thank you so, so much to Michael for taking the time to chat with us, and to our friend Katy for knowing that he's on Twitter and suggesting we reach out.

Minute 115: Second to Last

Minute 112: Goodbye, Warden.

December 03, 2019 05:30 - 8.09 MB

Crutchy gets out on his own. James spoils a very old Simpsons episode, and then confuses a joke. We’ve been operating under a false assumption for months.

Minute 111: There’s So Many People In the Croooooowwwwwwwwwddddd

December 02, 2019 05:30 - 7.76 MB

Not a lot going on in this minute, everyone. There’s a crowd. It’s cheering. Denton does Jack a concern. We explore an alternate universe where Bill Pullman is acting better than we realize in most of his movies. Ten Pin returns! (Probably.)

Minute 110: World Newspaper for Governor

November 29, 2019 11:00 - 14.4 MB

In this episode, Pulitzer goes through a wide range of emotions, a compromise is struck and then vastly overstated, then we basically outline Newsies: Aftermath, then Erin talks about a rabbit hole she fell down. Then James accurately predicts when the credits start.

Minute 109: Someuppance

Then I imagine someone ELSE as a hitman. The...

Minute 106: Newsiesiditidity(?)

November 25, 2019 11:00 - 12 MB

In this episode, Luke Edwards is known for his ability to say "NO", THE TRIUMPH, James posits a theory, Erin SLAMS New York City (SLAM a la Finish It), The 3-part Boots Manifesto, Girls Still Want Rights, David looks dirty, possibly because of a fun-loving Inkfight, and finally, James makes a BAD JOKE/REF THAT MAKES NO SENSE, but I (James) couldn't cut it because it leads to the 5.5 minute discussion about protests, war, tv, pop culture messing up our headcanons of whent things happen, and Jo...

Minute 105: It Was Fairly Successful

November 22, 2019 05:30 - 13.9 MB

James tells us all about Teddy Roosevelt (you know, the guy from Newsies). Erin forgets the format of the show for about 9 minutes. We have no idea how there is as much of this movie left as there clearly is.

104: Brooklyn to Trenty, Our Man Denty?

November 22, 2019 00:14 - 12.8 MB

Minute 103: "Teddy, I Need to Borrow a Horse."

November 20, 2019 05:30 - 11.6 MB

What is the geography of the area around the World distribution center? James gets extremely frustrated with Boots. A cart is literally put before a horse.

Minute 102: Roll For Newspaper Printing

November 19, 2019 05:30 - 31.5 MB

The newsies have to be very, very quiet while they do some very loud activities. Erin is baffled by some paper. Also, how does *time* work in the Piano Basement? Is Ben Franklin a ghost? James researches printing presses.

Minute 101: Sarcasm Is (Not?) a Good Look on You. Davy

November 18, 2019 05:30 - 14.8 MB

Today’s minute ends so nicely it’s just *chef’s kiss*. David is a Tik-Tok star, and just so sarcastic. Denton is a big huge printing press nerd. James make a Spanish-American war joke, and we write a deleted scene.

In this episode, finishes what he was saying, to very little fanfare or reaction, Jack continues an argument, Denton is a good journalist, David tries smoldering, Les is there, and Sarah has changed her outfit. We figure out whose stuff that is in the distribution center basement. James makes an upsetting joke and we figure out the proper medium for Denton's inspiring speech.

Minute 99: Smokey Ortega vs Bystander Jacobs

November 14, 2019 11:00 - 15.5 MB

Minute 97: The Experience of Women

November 12, 2019 11:00 - 15.2 MB

In this episode, women have always had it rough, just trying to walk down the street, Jack and the Delanceys aren't great at banter, Sarah tries an accent, James saw the sign and he looked it up, and Les does as he's directed.

We discover the secret B plot of the movie! Les has been hiding something. We solve out some more timeline puzzles.

Minute 93: Hypobole.

November 07, 2019 12:29 - 16.5 MB

For some reason, David is surprised at the revelation that Jack has lied to him. James does possibly the best bit of the entirety of Newsies Minute.

Minute 94: The Money Is My Family?

November 07, 2019 12:29 - 12.5 MB

It’s a short minute today. David fails a flight check, and would probably have failed his fight check if he’d gotten to roll one, but he did great on his grit roll.

Minute 92: Dark Night of the Soul

Jack is taken down a few pegs. The Newsies are taken down a few pegs. Everything is just really, really bad for everyone.

Minute 91: Hiya, Jack, Are You Singin’ In There?

November 04, 2019 05:30 - 19.8 MB

The Disney universe spirals in on itself as a character from Newsies marries a princess. Crutchy creeps on Jack. David gets aggressive and Racetrack…is a kindergarten teacher?

Minute 90: Sugarcoat It For Crutchie!

November 01, 2019 11:00 - 13.5 MB

In this episode, Erin doesn't notice things about Jack's cell. Crutchie returns! There's an obvious potato/roll. James could have used the phrase "Not yucking yums" and it would have been PERFECT, but he didn't. What did Crutchie Durden do to the saurkraut? We make some more cases for The Refuge being better than the Boarding House, but then James points out a very good reason to not want to be there. We take a hard stance against child abuse. There's an iconic Away Message-worthy line. Jack ...

Minute 89: Mush or Smoosh

October 31, 2019 11:00 - 13.1 MB

In this episode, reprise or reprise? Ogle or ogle? A continuity error, Seitz needs to give up his villainous ways because they're making him say buckwild things, Jack has options, Can criminals wear hats?, Jack says the realest teen thing, David gives in too easily, and finally a good transition into Jack's cell. Why is he alone? Where's his bed? Oh, there it is.

Minute 88: Dave is the New Jack

October 30, 2019 11:00 - 12.5 MB

In this episode, Erin suddenly yanks us all the way to the end of the minute to question the physics of something that James had thought was just fairly realistic, and in doing so also manages to plug another podcast she makes, The Third Temptation of Jack, we discuss how David would fare in The Refuge, James accidentally makes an unflattering comparison, then he says a thing that he decided not to edit out, we discuss the pros and cons of The Refuge vs the Boarding House, and Erin closes out...

Minute 87: Yes Please! What Friends?

October 29, 2019 11:00 - 17.8 MB

Minute 86: Secret Bit Commitment Class

October 28, 2019 11:00 - 12.7 MB

In this episode, Pulitzer treats Jack like a dog, makes historically inaccurate (though technically not wrong) statements about we, and commits to all the bits. Then the rest of the episode we talk about chess. James makes wrong statements about Harry Potter, chess, and a name he's said mere seconds beforehand. Also, Erin correctly interprets something James reads and he interprets it incorrectly. So that's frustrating (This is James writing, by the way). It's a journey.

Minute 81: 21 Seems Excessive, Yes?

October 21, 2019 04:30 - 17.1 MB

Denton breaks a promise he technically never made, and David acts like a child.

Minute 80: I Am Team "This One"

October 18, 2019 11:00 - 14.7 MB

In this episode, Jack's spot gets blown completely up. Like, publicly. Like, it's savage. Woof. This is a dark episode. We get into it and then something happens where it's clear we've been operating under COMPLETELY DIFFERENT ASSUMPTIONS ALL WEEK. It's truly a wild moment.

Minute 79: My Cousin Spot Conlon

October 17, 2019 11:00 - 18.2 MB

In this episode, Spot objects, the boys are fined, but Moneybags Denton shows up in a...bowtie?, How did David escape?, the Newsies are relieved, Racetrack is either relieved for envious about Jack's shiner, a Fellas-off has a clear winner, and we imagine Sarah having a grand revelation. Minute 78: Punched in the Face With a Horse

Minute 76: Ca-COP-phony

October 14, 2019 11:00 - 13.4 MB

In this episode, James makes a bad joke, James summarizes the opening of a different movie, Harold's unnamed wife is not in the mood for another riot, Butt. Still. (this was the alternate title), Kenny Ortega: Master Cheerleading Guy, Anne Margaret is DONE., Denton happens to notice Snyder, we imagine Denton in different eras, Snyder vs Snide, James mispronounces Dutch words, Denton uses some new lingo on not a great burn, #Snide, another round of "What are they drinking?", David points someo...

Minute 75: Swing, Swing

October 11, 2019 04:30 - 17.7 MB

There is some SEXUAL. TENSION. In this minute folks. Sarah gets all dolled up for no reason, but she looks really pretty so it’s okay (even if her dress is falling apart). Medda doesn’t use a set piece.

Minute 74: Anyway, Here’s High Times, Hard Times

October 10, 2019 04:30 - 19.3 MB

That wolf at your door is a legit Disney villain—he probably steeples his fingers a lot. Kid Blink makes Medda a little noivous. Everyone knows the song.
