Everyone can use a hug and who better to learn this from than a child. The world can use as many hugs and love as we all can offer. When we are tired, upset, hurt, excited, overjoyed, etc. a hug is readily available. Who wouldn’t want a good hug!

Welcome to this edition of Newsgram!

Do you need a hug? Of course you do. We all need a hug, a smile or maybe some kind words. I like to put on some music when I need a pick-me-up. Do you have a song that makes your heart sing? Maybe it’s just a sunny day, a Hummingbird or a bee on the flower.

Yes, today is going to be another positive, uplifting, feel good episode of Newsgram. Let’s begin with a story. One that is guaranteed to put a smile on your face, by Johanna A Ferket

Johanna A Ferket – I was in the grocery store and there was an older gentleman and he couldn’t figure out what he wanted to take or what he was gonna eat for lunch and I said , “you look like you are really struggling here. These grocery stores are so big it’s just a nightmare to know what to buy” and he looks at me and the he goes, “well, My wife passed away and now I have to figure out my own food without her”, and I said well what was your favorite, or what was your wife favorite, and he said she liked Tuna and I said maybe today is Tuna day and then he went on to explain that he and his wife would go dancing all over North America. Can you Imagine? They were married sixty-three years. They’d been to every state and every province in North America. We gave one another a hug and he was crying but he was smiling when  he left. He changed my life and I know I changed his.

I never used to stop and talk to strangers. Too busy, too self absorbed, too worried about getting caught up in their lives…all kinds of reasons but I do it all the time now. It’s fascinating. Most people are happy to talk for a few minutes — we’re not moving in together or anything — and being completely honest here I don’t hug strangers but a simple exchange of words, a smile, a little common courtesy is all it takes to change someone’s day and set it on the right path.

I know how that sounds but we are so isolated these days. Our habits can be so confining. I was angry when video games went to single player experiences because I saw this coming — that’s a tangent for another day but wasn’t it the Irish poet William Butler Yeats who said “A stranger is a friend you haven’t met yet”? Sometimes when you’re feeling down it might just be other people you are looking for. Johanna Ferket knows all about this and she wrote a children’s book called “Do You Need a Hug”.

Johanna A Ferket – This little girl sets out to make the world a better place. She wanders off and she meets and older man, and she meets a dog in a park and she gives the dog a hug and makes him feel good and she comes to a garden with a lady. When she gets to the garden she hugs a sunflower and there’s a bee on it and the bee looked at her kind of funny and the flower vibrated like it knew it was getting a hug, the bee looked surprised but seemed content and went on collecting pollen.

A lot of people are afraid of bees. Now, I don’t recommend actually hugging a flower with a bee on it but  the truth is the bee is not going to bother you. They have a job to do and stinging you isn’t it.

Johanna A Ferket – When we give off good energy and when we are positive and live right that energy spreads all around where you are.

That’s really the bottom line here. You get what you give. The world is a challenging place right now. We need to do whatever we can to try and make it better. Give it a try I guarantee it’s going to make you feel good inside.

Johanna A Ferket – Just be kind. Reach out and be a good person.

Do You Need a Hug? by Johanna A Ferket, is all about spreading positive energy. To set aside whatever you’re feeling for the moment and see the good in the world.

It looks like a children’s book but I’ll bet your grandma would love it too.

Johanna A Ferket – It’s good for anyone you know and I imagine myself or a mother or a father reading the story to a child and then at the end they’re gonna give one another a hug and it will benefit both.

Do you need a hug? This podcast is the best I can do from here so consider yourself hugged. Now log get a copy of her book from Xlibris.com, Amazon or Barnes and Noble.com and give it to someone to brighten their day.  And that will do it for this edition of Newsgram from Webtalkradio.com

Johanna was recently featured on the Books on Air podcast with host Suzanne Harris.
