The famous atheist Jean-Paul Sartre fought against despair as he approached death. He tried to convince himself that he would die in hope. Then in great distress, he affirmed, “But hope needs a foundation.”
Christ is that foundation for all who believe. In his first letter, the Apostle Peter wrote to suffering Christians in Asia Minor to remind them that they have a Living Hope in Christ and that hope will never fade away.
In chapter 5, Peter concludes his first epistle with a series of exhortations directed to different groups of people in the church. He assures them that, after they have suffered a little while, “the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you. To him be the dominion forever and ever. Amen.”
