Jesus Christ Superstar (1970)

The sung through rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar from Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice is Jules’ pick for musicals this week (and Kristen taught us the term ‘sung through’).

The musical draws parallels to the cultural revolution of the 60′s and the rise of the Christ cult, and the violence that ended those movements.

There are also notions of inevitability and questions of freewill. Specifically that Judas’ betrayal and Jesus’ fate were preordained and the will of God, and no matter how hard they worked against that fate the outcome would be the same.

The songs run the gamut of emotional, sappy, silly, and dramatic.

Behind the scenes, Judas, Jesus and Mary Magdalene on the left.

You can purchase or stream Jesus Christ Superstar on Amazon and iTunes. The soundtrack is available on iTunes, Amazon and Spotify.

NEXT WEEK: One last pick with Keith’s pick, the Dickens musical Oliver.
