June 11, 2022 - National Corn On The Cob Day | National German Chocolate Cake Day

Welcome to June 11th, 2022 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate Summer’s best veggie and a confusing cake.  
Americans love fresh corn and, on average, eat about six pounds per person each year. During summer cookouts, it’s arguably the most popular food other than burgers and hotdogs. But some people take their love of corn to the extreme. The National Sweet Corn Eating Championship is held each year in West Palm Beach, Florida and attracts corn aficionados from around the world. Carmen Cincotti from New Jersey holds the record for most corn on the cob eaten in a 12-minute span. In 2019, Cincotti wolfed down 61.75 ears. That’s roughly 38.5 lbs of corn, more than enough to last someone for several summers. On National Corn on the Cob Day, celebrate with some sweet corn of your own. But go slow and savor it.
German chocolate cake…it’s a luscious dessert straight from Germany, right? Nope. The cake is actually named after the man who invented it: Sam German. The thing that made it stand out from traditional chocolate cakes was its use of sweet, rather than dark baking chocolate. Plus the frosting with coconut and pecans. For years, it was known as German’s Chocolate Cake, but wasn’t particularly popular until the 1950s when a newspaper in Dallas, Texas brought it to the public eye. And somewhere along the way, the apostrophe S got dropped, giving it the somewhat confusing name we know today. There’s no confusion about how delicious it is though, so go ahead splurge on National German Chocolate Cake Day, with a nice big slice.
