Description:

This week, Randi, Jaime, and Gabe discuss recent murders of Black men Alton Sterling and Phillando Castille and five Dallas Police Officers Lorne Ahrens, Michael Krol, Michael Smith, Brent Thompson, and Patrick Zamarripa. We firmly support the #BlackLivesMatter movement, but also recognize the contributions of law enforcement in keeping abortion clinics safe. The Columbus Police Department was represented twice during the hearings on the new Columbus clinic protection ordinance, once represented by a Black female officer and later by a Black male officer. Our discussion focuses on the need to balance calls police reform and respect the value of responsible police officers. Our That’s What She Said of the week goes to Warrensville Heights, Ohio Police Officer Nakia Jones’s video criticizing racist police.

In the Title IX Sports Report, we applaud Serena Williams for having the bet year ever. After appearing in Beyoncé’s Lemonade video, she won Wimbledon and tied the all-time women’s tennis grand slam record. She has also set grand slam records unmatched by any player, male or female. She is clearly one of the greatest femaleathletes of all time. We also recognize her confident voice in calling for social justice.
