I love it when I have the opportunity to throw a party with a theme that I’ve been thinking about for years, but have never had the right excuse to do it.  Well, a few weeks ago I finally got the opportunity to throw an Alice in Wonderland Party and it was AMAZING! If I do say so myself.

It was an “Un-Birthday Party” for a friend’s daughter who was turning six and because I put so much time and work into the decorations, I decided to do the kid-friendly birthday party during the day, then at night turn it into an adult-only “Down the Rabbit Hole – Mad Tea Party”!  It was crazy! The first people arrived at 1:30pm and the last guest left at 6:30am (yes, AM) and we had so much fun!!!

 

The Tent:

I decorated the inside of a 10′ x 10′ canopy tent with:

“Eat Me” table for the food, including cupcakes with “Eat Me” toothpick signs

Behind the “Eat Me” table I hung the Mad Hatter Mural (see photo further down in post).
Plates, napkins, and plasticware in bright colors.
I didn’t overload the table with food because it was a VERY warm day and I didn’t want it to spoil, so I just kept rotating out almost empty dishes with fresh dishes that I had premade in the fridge.

“Drink Me” table for the drinks (juice boxes during the day for the kids, alcoholic sweet tea at night for the adult party)

Behind the “Drink Me” table I hung cork stopped bottles half-full of colored water, painted teapots with ribbon hanging down out of the spout, and a painted foam dormouse.
Cups in bright pink and blue will colorful straws.
We had a large tub filled with ice for sodas, beer, and wine.
Juice boxes with “Drink Me” labels.

Painted teapots and teacups with saucers:

I found a bunch of cheap teapots and cups with saucers at the local thrift store and spray painted them bright colors (don’t use for food or drink after painting!)
I used paint pen to draw on designs.
Then I used a glue gun to attach the pieces together and create table decorations.

I hung colorful paper lanterns (with LED lights inside for the night party) on the inside top of the tent.
Along the top sides of the tent, I hung beanies and top hats for guests to wear.

 

Murals to cover cabinets and walls:

I used a man-made material called Oly*Fun for all my murals because it comes in lots of colors, it’s light, it takes paint well, and won’t fray when you cut it.  It’s similar to fabric that reusable shopping bags are made from and very thin (so make sure you have a cardboard or other backing when you paint because it will seep through).
I painted murals to cover the cabinets in the kitchen, one for the tent, and a few for my Walrus and the Carpenter / Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum room.
I found that cheap acrylic paint worked pretty well on the Oly fabric, but if you use a colored fabric know that the color will show through (especially if the paint is thinned).

 

Insulation Board Character Cutouts:

I love using insulation board for projects like this.  It’s rigid, takes primer well, and the thin pieces are easy to cut with a rolling cutter.
Prime the board (I used spray paint color primer) and draw on your design with a sharpie.
Paint your design then add in the details with an oil based paint pen.
Use a rolling cutter (use a cutting mat underneath) to cut out your design.

 

Giant Paper Flowers:

These are so cute! I found instructions online and just used color paper, a stapler, and a glue gun to make these giant paper flowers.  They added some great color to the railing!

 

Fun Food and Drinks:

I added in a few fun touches with the food and drinks.  The “oyster” cookies are just Nilla wafers, purple frosting, and a white edible sugar pearl.  For the adult Mad Tea Party I made “Drink Me” shots with jalapeno infused vodka and sweetened lime juice plus a “Mad Tea” that was black iced tea, honey simple syrup infused with mint and lemon, and bourbon. So good!

 

The Dresses!

I made tutu dresses for all the little girls at the kids’ party and they looked so cute! I’m just so sad I didn’t get pictures of all of them together!

Music!

Don’t forget the music! There are lots of songs about Alice out there and you can even play the soundtrack from the Disney Alice in Wonderland movies.

 

Misc:

A few other things I did that didn’t photograph well so I can’t show you…

Down the Rabbit Hole Hallway with signs, pictures, picture frames, and sayings to welcome people into the world of Wonderland.
Directional signs around the rooms saying things like “this way”, “that way”, “yonder”, “down”, “up”, etc.
Accent lighting
