Ana Guzman ideaXme space ambassador and space exploration audio visual communications expert interviews Dr Estella Hernandez Gillette, professor of Human Resources management at the University of Houston.

In my next interview for ideaXme, I bring you a story that is less technical and more inspirational. Dr. Estella Hernandez Gillette gives us an oral history that starts with a young immigrant woman hired by NASA straight out of high school during the space race in 1964.

Her experiences and points of view are very different than those you would expect from a Hispanic woman who started her career during that era. In this interview, you’ll hear the highlights of Estella’s NASA career of 41 years while working with engineers, astronauts and top executives during one of the most exciting times in human spaceflight.

Hear about her struggles to learn the language and assimilating into her new surroundings in Houston. Then later surviving a sink or swim situation when she first started as a secretary at NASA’s Johnson Space Center. Her determination and strength persevered and she later became an influential player within the reigns of leadership at the center. From implementing new training programs to being a participator in the astronaut selection committee, her efforts were fruitful in helping to make the center’s workforce more successful and diverse.

Her thoughts on women in aerospace, the most recent all female spacewalk and the comparisons of the morale during the Apollo era and now the Artemis generation, these are just a few opinions shared that might surprise you.

Now in her retirement, as a professor of Human Resources management at the University of Houston, she continues to inspire and mentor tomorrow’s work force. She also currently serves as Vice President of the NASA Alumni League. Estella remains very active in aerospace, STEM and NASA related outreach efforts for people of all ages.
