Mona Lisa was not a famous painting until on August 21st, 1911, when it was stolen By Vincenzo Peruggia, who kept the infamous painting to himself for 2 years. During this time, the police blamed the theft on some famous suspects, in an attempt to resolve the mystery by all means necessary.
