Last night the Vancouver School Board held a meeting to hear from proponents of the Culinary Arts program.

The elective course, which allows students to learn how to safely and efficiently prepare, cook, serve, and store food in a commercial setting , is currently on the chopping block due to concerns from Vancouver School Board management over declining enrollment and increasing capital costs associated with the program.

In response to the cuts, organizations like the BC Restaurant and Food Services Association have spoken out saying that these cuts by the VSB will impact the future of BC’s foodservice and hospitality industry, which is in the midst of a labour shortage and needs approximately 20,000 skilled workers by 2021.

Last night, the school board got the opportunity to hear from a student who is currently enrolled in the Culinary Arts program.

Noah is a grade 11 student at Windermere highschool in Vancouver. I caught up with him after the school board meeting and asked him more about the program and why he enjoys it so much…
