Why is the Senate stalling on a bill requiring sexual-assault law training for judges?

We want to come back now to a story that we talked about on Friday’s program.

Two years ago, a bill passed through the House of Commons that would require training for judges on sexual-assault law.

That was two years ago. It still hasn't made it through the Senate. It keeps getting pushed back. Right now, it’s stuck at a Senate committee, who have not yet started studying the bill.

More on that in a moment - but first let’s hear from Rona Ambrose. She’s the former leader of the Conservative Party of Canada, and the former MP who actually introduced the bill in the first place. On Friday’s show, she told us she believes it’s important this legislation gets passed.

Now as I mentioned, it’s stuck at the Senate Legal and Constitutional Affairs Committee. They have not yet begun studying this bill so it can advance to the next stage and get to a point where it’s passed into law.

Why is that? Just before we came on air, I spoke with the Chair of that committee, Senator Serge Joyal.

Kwantlen Polytechnic University closes its campuses due to “unsubstantiated threat”

Let’s check in on the story that’s breaking from Kwantlen Polytechnic University - they have announced that  all campuses are closed.

On Twitter, the school says it has been alerted by Surrey RCMP about an “unsubstantiated threat” against KPU.

All classes at all campuses are cancelled for rest of the day and the buildings will remain closed while security reviews the situation.
