Chapter 4

An end of the provincial Legislature summary

Life on the streets – and sidewalks – of downtown Penticton is about to get more uncomfortable for some people.

Earlier this year, people in Penticton protested proposed legislative changes that would make it an offence to loiter on sidewalks in some high profile areas within the city.

Councillors in Penticton have ignored protests from inside and outside the Okanagan city and have passed a bylaw amendment that makes it an offence to sit or lie on some downtown sidewalks.  Penticton council voted 5-2 to approve an amendment to the Good Neighbourhood Bylaw, giving police and bylaw officers the power to hand violations $100 fines.
