Greens win in Nanaimo-Ladysmith, as the NDP tumbles to third place

The Green Party's Paul Manly beat out six other candidates last night to win Nanaimo-Ladysmith in a federal by-election that many parties and political experts considered a test run six months before the nationwide vote.

Manly took about 38 per cent of the ballots in the former NDP riding - the NDP actually slid back into third place, with the Conservatives coming second.

In his victory speech, Manly promised to prove to his constituents that they've made the right choice. Manly says his victory shows the other parties that Canadians are serious about climate change, and he expects the Green wave of support will grow in the October election.

Manly will become the Green party's second member of Parliament, joining party leader Elizabeth May.

Vancouver landmarks turn yellow for this year’s Darkness Into Light event

If you’re passing by BC Place, Vancouver City Hall, or the Bloedel Conservatory in Queen Elizabeth Park this week, keep an eye out. You’ll see them lit up in yellow.

It’s all to promote awareness of an event that’s taking place this Saturday morning, in the name of preventing suicide, and promoting awareness of positive mental health.

The event is called Darkness Into Light. And two of the organizers, Marie Gill, and Amy O’Sullivan, came into us this morning to tell us more - and to explain how you get involved.

So to recap: Darkness Into Light Vancouver takes place Saturday, May 11 at 4.30 a.m. at Burnaby Lake Park.

You need to register in advance - you can do that by searching on Facebook for Darkness Into Light’s Vancouver walk, or by going to DarknessIntoLight.ie.

Surrey Police Department officers ready to hit the streets by July of 2020: Mayor Doug McCallum

In the annual "State of the City" address in Surrey today, Mayor Doug McCallum reiterated that forming a civic police force is "the right move". And he says the new officers will be ready to hit the streets by July next year.

The event sparked something of a controversy, because of the decision to have a police car sitting outside - fully emblazoned with ‘Surrey Police Department’ text and logos on the side.

Cloverdale Community Association President Mike Bola says the decision to roll out a Surrey PD vehicle before the new civic force is even approved by the provincial government is “mindboggling” and a “waste of money”

We are told the colours of the new SPD are yellow, blue and red.

Documentary ‘Because We Are Girls’ explores family’s secret of sexual abuse

A Surrey-area family is the focus of a heart-wrenching yet hopeful new movie that documents the sexual abuse of three sisters who grew up in Williams Lake decades ago.

The sisters – Jeeti, Kira and Salakshana – were abused by an older cousin beginning in their childhood years, but didn’t tell the entire family about it until 2006. As their relatives and police were made aware of the incidents, a court case slowly developed, as did a documentary film directed by Baljit Sangra. One of the siblings, Jeeti Pooni, led the effort to have Because We Are Girls made, to shed light on the issue and also protect and empower girls today, including her two daughters.
