Nancy Pelosi wants commitments on workers’ rights in Mexico before Democrats will support CUSMA

In an interview with Politico, U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said that before Democrats are prepared to honour and recognize the Canada United States Mexico Trade Agreement (the re-worked NAFTA), Mexico needs to work on and amend legislation that protects workers’ rights. The deal has drawn criticism from the Democrats- due to its apparent position on labour and biological drugs.

It’s the kind of story that many people will be familiar with - but when it comes to firefighters, that could cause an even bigger issue. Because if there’s a major disaster and public infrastructure is damaged, having staff so far away from their place of work could prove problematic.

U.S. deems Canada ‘major money laundering country’ as gangs exploit weak law enforcement

The U.S. Department of State has designated Canada as a “major money laundering country” where foreign drug-trafficking gangs are exploiting weak law enforcement and soft laws.

A report by the department last month places Canada on a shortlist of countries vulnerable to significant drug money laundering transactions. It underlines a number of threats reported over the past year in Global News investigations, such as the laundering of fentanyl-trafficking proceeds from China through British Columbia casinos, real estate and underground banks.

Butts pledged to “make it all work from a communications perspective” in texts with Jody Wilson-Raybould

Text messages between Jody Wilson-Raybould and one of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's top advisers suggest she initially tried to prevent her move out of the prestigious Justice portfolio by arguing it would send the wrong message to Indigenous Peoples.

However, Wilson-Raybould's exchanges with Trudeau's former principal secretary, Gerald Butts -- which were submitted to the Commons justice committee -- became increasingly angry and ominous-sounding as the January 14th cabinet shuffle approached.

None of the texts directly mentions SNC-Lavalin, however Butts says he had numerous conversations with Wilson-Raybould in which she stated she was being punished for refusing to intervene in the criminal prosecution of S-N-C Lavalin.

A new tool that’s been created by scientists at the University of Victoria can help find the presence of animals in bodies of water in a matter of days.

And that’s significant, because it can help us as humans to detect and protect species which may be endangered.

Canada warming up twice as fast as the rest of the world: Environment and Climate Change Canada report

Canada is warming up twice as fast as the rest of the world and that warming is “effectively irreversible”, a new scientific report from Environment and Climate Change Canada says.

Warming is happening even faster in winter, leaving southern Canadians with more winter rainfall and northern Canadians with melting permafrost and less sea ice.
