‘BCLC could have stopped this’: Former casino investigators question whether officials unwilling to stop criminal activity

Several former investigators who say they lost jobs in B.C.’s casino industry for whistle-blowing are questioning whether some B.C. officials deliberately allowed government-regulated casinos to be used as hubs for money laundering.

In an exclusive investigation, Global News has conducted extensive interviews with the casino industry sources, and also reviewed documents and court testimony from several of the sources.

The sources all pointed to allegations of “willful blindness” of dirty cash transactions in B.C. casinos. And one questioned whether a “conspiracy” has occurred, that would allow dirty funds estimated at up to $2-billion, to flow through Lottery Corp. casinos.

Snow to hit the Lower Mainland as BC’s cold snap continues

This week’s cold snap continues, as snow returns to the immediate forecast for Metro Vancouver. A special weather statement issued early Thursday morning by Environment Canada warns of overnight snowfall continuing into Friday, as well as “bitterly cold arctic outflow winds Friday night and Saturday.” The warning covers the City of Vancouver and all surrounding Metro Vancouver communities.

Pilot program at St Paul’s gives a supply of Suboxone to overdose patients upon discharge

The Emergency Department at St Paul's hospital is providing opioid overdose patients with take away treatments upon discharge. The treatment package is three days worth of a drug called "Suboxone", which St Pauls has been administering in its Emergency Department for a few years.

1,489 British Columbians died of suspected overdoses last year - which is higher than the numbers who died in 2017.

That’s more people than the combined total of those who died by suicides, homicides, and motor vehicle crashes.
