Proposed law would ban B.C. government from taking profits made by ICBC, Vancouver Sun reports

The front page of the Vancouver Sun today leads with a story about ICBC.

The Attorney General, David Eby, is preparing legislation which would ban the governments from taking any surplus the corporation might make, and putting it back into the province's pocket - assuming, of course, that ICBC gets back to making profit.

So where would the money go instead? And why is this legislation being introduced now?

Impeachment inquiry is a “disgrace”, U.S. President says

US President, Donald Trump, tuned into his impeachment hearing this morning and later called the proceedings a “disgrace” and a kangaroo court.

Members of the House impeachment panel are hearing from National Security Council aide Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Vindman and Jennifer Williams, an aide to Vice-President Mike Pence.

Vindman testified Trump inappropriately pressured Ukraine's president to open an investigation of former Vice-President Joe Biden and his son's dealings in Ukraine during a July phone call.

Some homeless people in Surrey are fearing they’ll be evicted from their campsite

Could a showdown be shaping up between the City of Surrey and homeless people?

A group of homeless people are afraid if they don't go into newly-found shelter space, they could be evicted from their campsite.               

Homeless people living in a wooded area off the King George Boulevard in North Surrey known as the "Sanctuary" say they won't let the city use the opening of a new shelter as an excuse to shut down their homeless camp. 

Spokesperson Dave Diewert says there are fears the encampment will be dismantled once the shelter is full. But Councillor Brenda Locke says no one will be forced to do anything against their will...

Another business in the South Granville neighbourhood plans to close its doors

Vancouver's South Granville neighbourhood is going through some changes.

Last month, the Ouisi Bistro closed its doors after a quarter of a century in business, where owners blamed a rent increase.

Across the street, the West Restaurant and Bar is preparing to shut up shop on New Year's Eve.

And now, another local business is preparing to leave the neighbourhood: Memphis Blues.

Vancouver Island parents want son’s death to be labeled a ‘poisoning’ and not an ‘overdose’ 

John Hedican lost his son to fentanyl in 2017. Now, he is asking for the B.C. Coroner’s Service to change the way the label deaths such as his son’s. Listen to this report from CKNW’s Claire Allen.

Internet outage in Iran means Vancouverites are struggling to contact family there

In Iran, the government shut down internet access across the nation of 80 million people to staunch demonstrations that took place in a reported 100 cities and towns.

Last Friday, the Iranian government announced it would ration fuel - causing prices to soar by 50 per cent. This sparked widespread protests.

But the decision to shut down internet access has left friends and relatives of those in Iran concerned. And that includes family members here in Vancouver.
