Chapter 3

Government calls for feasibility study for the future of the Massey Crossing

The BC government is unveiling a comprehensive report on the future of the George Massey tunnel. The NDP put the brakes on the Liberal government plan to build a ten lane bridge to replace the aging, often congested tunnel. The report out today doesn't seem to offer firm recommendations on the path ahead. It does suggest ten lanes is too much; and a smaller bridge may be a better idea. The report recommends a smaller bridge (6 to 8 lanes), or an ITT (immersed two tunnel) crossing with up to eight lanes instead, potentially used in conjunction with the existing Massey Tunnel.

Global Legislative Bureau Chief Keith Baldrey asked the Minister why it’s taking the government so long to figure out what to do with the Massey crossing…

Minister Trevena was also asked about the money that has been spent on the Massey crossing. Approximately $70 million has been spent on the engineering work for the 10 lane bridge proposal, and now the government wants to spend $40 million on fixing the existing tunnel. Does this mean that the government is planning to keep the tunnel?

Travel Best Bets: Government released the Air Passenger Bill of Rights

Air passengers who are bumped from overbooked flights or who are forced to sit through long delays could receive up to $2,400 under proposed regulations for the government's promised passenger bill of rights.  The proposed compensation will use a sliding scale with larger airlines and longer delays requiring bigger compensation payments. The Canadian Transportation Agency is releasing the draft regulations for public comment with an aim to having the rules take effect by next summer. The regulations would also force airlines to automatically seat children under age 14 next to their parents rather than require them to pay an additional fee to select their own seats.
