Chapter 2

Scandal at the Legislature: Speaker tried to appoint friend as new sergeant-at-arms for B.C. legislature

After a wild day at the BC Legislature, we’re all wondering what on earth will go down today. We know Speaker Darryl Plecas will meet with his second special advisor today. Wally Oppal was appointed yesterday. We don’t even know what the first special advisor will do/who they are. Global BC Legislative Bureau Chief Keith Baldrey joins us to discuss what we know about the situation so far…

The legislature erupted into chaos. Reporters confronted Speaker Darryl Plecas in the hallways.

But, that never happened. Rather, at 2pm, Plecas disappeared down a hallway and instead his assistant, the professional mystery man at the centre of all of this, Allen Mullen, emerged to read a statement:

The Trudeau government has now introduced back-to-work legislation in the House of Commons to end the labour dispute at Canada Post. The leader of the opposition Liberals, Andrew Wilkinson, said Tuesday he plans to introduce amendments that would allow private insurers to provide insurance for ride-sharing right away, a move supported by the Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC). Chapter 5

Bigger than Boxing Day: B.C. expected to spend more than ever on Black Friday

It might not have started out as a Canadian tradition, but there’s no doubt about it, Canucks have gone mad for Black Friday. Thousands of British Columbians are expected to log on to e-commerce websites in search of deals on Friday, while even more are anticipated to pack malls and shops around the province. The bargain hunting bonanza has grown so large that payment processing company Moneris says Black Friday has now eclipsed Canada’s historic deal-hunting holiday, Boxing Day, in terms of spending.

Only the last Friday before Christmas still sees bigger sales volume than Black Friday, says the company.

Guest: Michael LeBlanc

Senior Retail Advisor at Retail Council of Canada

SIMI’S LOSER AND WINNER OF THE DAY

B.C. Drivers

Burn baby, burn!!!

The public auto insurer announced this morning a net loss of $582-million for the first six months of this fiscal year.

It says net claims in the first half of the year were up 26% over the same period last year, and settlement costs have continued to grow, with an increasing number of large loss claims running into the hundreds of thousands of dollars each.

ICBC is also blaming the lawyers, saying continued aggressive pressure from plaintiff counsel is leading to slower claims closure rates, and higher settlement demands.

In the previous fiscal year, ICBC lost $1.3-billion and it's now projecting a net loss of $890-million this fiscal year.

Owners of Ashok Jewellers in Mississauga

A store owner in Mississauga, Ontario wasn’t going to let the thieves who tried to rob him get away without a fight!

That’s when they came face-to-face with the owner (and the owner’s son and brother) who were all wielding swords!
