The BC government is unveiling a comprehensive report on the future of the George Massey tunnel. The NDP put the brakes on the Liberal government plan to build a ten lane bridge to replace the aging, often congested tunnel. The report out today doesn't seem to offer firm recommendations on the path ahead. It does suggest ten lanes is too much; and a smaller bridge may be a better idea. The report recommends a smaller bridge (6 to 8 lanes), or an ITT (immersed two tunnel) crossing with up to eight lanes instead, potentially used in conjunction with the existing Massey Tunnel.

Global Legislative Bureau Chief Keith Baldrey asked the Minister why it’s taking the government so long to figure out what to do with the Massey crossing…

Minister Trevena was also asked about the money that has been spent on the Massey crossing. Approximately $70 million has been spent on the engineering work for the 10 lane bridge proposal, and now the government wants to spend $40 million on fixing the existing tunnel. Does this mean that the government is planning to keep the tunnel?
