Police are investigating Vancouver's first homicide of the year after a serious assault in Oppenheimer Park on New Year's Day.

VPD says a man was assaulted just before 1pm on January 1st, near the basketball courts in the park.         

The victim, 62-year old Jesus Cristobal-Esteban, died in hospital yesterday.
