Humans Have Changed The Course of Evolution in Ways We Never Predicted, Scientist Warns

A paper based on research from around the globe concludes that human beings have radically reshaped evolution for everything from birds to fish to plants. Sarah Otto from the University of British Columbia says people are trimming and pruning the entire tree of life.

The paper says birds are evolving smaller, more maneuverable wings to help them dodge buildings and vehicles. Fish are developing mouths too small for hooks. Ā Large animals are becoming extinct everywhere on the planet. Otto says it's wrong to believe evolution always takes eons _ changes can show up within years. She says human-driven changes are narrowing the options for species to respond to future environmental pressures.

SOS Childrenā€™s Village Surrey hosts gala to recognize success and achievement within the B.C. foster care system

Did you know in British Columbia there are over 10,500 children who do not live with their biological parents? A child in foster care in Canada faces the following more hardships than the average child. They will move seven homes, which means 7 families, 7 schools, 7 neighbourhoods etc. As a result, of youth in care, only 40% will graduate within 2 years of expected graduation date.

SOS Childrenā€™s Villages is the worldā€™s largest non-governmental, non-denominational child development organization and cares for fostered, orphaned, or abandoned children. It has existed for over 65 years with presence in 135 countries and 572 Villages. British Columbia is home to the only SOS Childrenā€™s Village in Canada. SOS Childrenā€™s Village BC provides homes, a supportive community, and programs to help foster children and youth in need grow into caring, self-reliant adults.

Only 6% of SOS Childrenā€™s Village B.C.ā€™s funding comes from the government, with the vast majority coming from individual and corporate donors. SOS B.C. uniquely focuses on lifelong engagement with foster children and embracing their cultural heritage, and is fighting to fix the foster care system in this province. SOS Childrenā€™s Village B.C. is setting the standard for the care of foster children and youth in British Columbia. Indeed, the village in Surrey has a track record of 100% of foster youth graduating high school within two years of expected date, versus only 40% of foster youth graduating in the provincial foster care system.

Douglas Dunn, the Executive Director at SOS Childrenā€™s Village BC, joins us today to discuss the 2018 SOS International Foster Awards Gala at the Vancouver Marriott Pinnacle Downtown tonight, and the work that the organization does to help youth in care.

With just two weeks before the election reform referendum deadline, ballots are still just trickling in

Premier John Horgan says heā€™ll instruct his NDP MLAs to block an unappealing version of one of the proportional representation models, if it wins in this monthā€™s referendum. Horgan told Postmedia News on Wednesday that if British Columbians vote to replace the provinceā€™s electoral system with mixed member proportional, he will order NDP MLAs to oppose the so-called closed list approach when a legislature committee decides the details of the new system.

Also, with just two weeks before the election reform referendum deadline, ballots are still just trickling in. Increasing by only about a percent each day.
