Having left school at 15, Bill Grimsey was a butcher's boy, before joining Bishops supermarket chain as a trainee manager, rising to become a director. He went on to work for Tesco, before holding senior retail management jobs in Hong Kong and South Africa.

Returning to the UK, Grimsey was later CEO of Wickes, Iceland, Booker and Focus DIY, before going on to write both “Sold Out” and “The Grimsey Review” – which reports on the state of the UK high street, highlighting the problem of excessive retail space and suggesting instead that the centres of cities and towns should focus on becoming community spaces.
