It’s Guest Blog Wednesday featuring Uli Staiger!

I remember that cold day in spring, back in 1991, when I visited a photography fair in the Javits Center in Manhattan. At that time, I worked for Neil Molinaro as a first assistant in Clark, New Jersey. Neil is an unbelievebly creative advertising photographer and an blooming nice guy. Not only has he created his own lighting system, he also managed to bring scenes on film that were almost impossible to even think! And because that’s not enough, he hired a German guy named Uli Staiger as his assistant.

Royal Mail stamps mark the 150th anniversary of the London Underground – Telegraph

Royal Mail is issuing a set of ten special stamps, celebrating the 150th anniversary of the London Underground. The stamps are issued on 9 January 2013 which marks the exact date of the opening of the Metropolitan Railway between Paddington Station and Farringdon Street – the first part of what was to become the London Underground. The stamps show a timeline of the development of the London Underground from the first steam driven Metropolitan line service to one of the most modern Jubilee line stations, Canary Wharf. The world’s oldest underground transportation network covers 402 kilometres of track, serves 270 stations, runs across 11 lines, and carries 1.2 billion passengers per year

Google+ adds pan and zoom feature for high-res photos

Google+ tech lead Dave Cohen announced on Google+ this evening that the service has rolled out a new feature for interacting with high res photos. It’s a pretty elegant implementation for navigation: a mouse wheel or two finger swipe will zoom you in and out, while clicking and dragging lets you pan around the image. A map of your image appears in the top left of the screen, showing you exactly where you are as you begin zooming in and panning around. Hovering over the map box with your mouse also gives you the option to zoom in and out and select specific sections on an image.

Keeping it Real in HDR using Photoshop

Of all techniques that have come with the advent of digital photography, perhaps the most controversial and divisive is HDR or high dynamic range. Some people love the surrealistic almost cartoon like quality of extreme HDR, others hate it with a passion, in photographic terms it is on a level with the PC and Mac arguments of the computer fraternity. That said, HDR is an extremely useful tool for creating realistic images that are beyond the scope of a single exposure. The secret is to get the dynamic range similar to what the naked eye can see at not beyond. In this brief tutorial we will have a look at how to do that in Photoshop.
