Good morning everybody today is November 13th 2019, I hope everybody is having a wonderful Wednesday morning. Today we have a article on hydropower and climate change and how it affects us daily. So lets break it down! As everybody should know hydropower dams are all around the world and they help us with our nation's energy. But it's not reliable enough to easily meet our 21st century needs and we can't create enough for New Rivers due to weakened Environmental Protections placed on harmful dams. Our nation is at a Crossroads and we desperately need to reduce our dependency on fossil fuels.
It's actually very imperative that we continue are track on zero emissions and replacing fossil fuels, most people don't realize that we actually use hydroelectricity and a lot of people are still foreign to the concept of solar energy and wind energy. The beginning step of transitioning into a zero emissions world is putting to rest fossil fuels leaving them alone and only using renewable resources such as solar wind and hydroelectricity.
The only solutions that we have at the moment for hydroelectricity is we must increase efficiency at existing hydropower dams most of them were built between 50 and 75 even more than a hundred years ago how many of the dams are intensified inefficient generating equipment and the damn owners should be required to get the equipment up to today standards and make sure that they are working to maximum capacity for every drop of water that runs through the machine.
We should consider adding hydropower capacity to existing dams seeing as there are more than 90,000 dams in the US and only a quarter of these are actually in use and actually have hydropower capacity making sure that we add the hydropower to these dams in good repair can exponentially push more of them to be ready and usable.
We must recognize that the dams have finite life spans and have to be continuously monitored and rebuilt we also need to make sure that everyone understands that dams have an impact and can be broken apart by erosion over time so it doesn't matter the size of them but it does matter the amount of Maintenance put on them. It really doesn't make any sense to start construction on new dams considering the fact that we have so many around the world what we should really be doing is trying to efficiently get all of them up to today's standards and start prioritizing hydroelectricity.
Everyone must remember that dams do damage Rivers they disrupt the flow they degrade the water quality they continuously block the rivers normal vital functions in a they do destroy some fish and wildlife habitats but we could turn around and relocate these habitats to make sure that we do not endanger any fish species.
My final note is that hydropower dams can be contributing to the global warming pollution when a forest is cut down to make way for a dam or Reservoir sing as those trees no longer are available to absorb carbon dioxide created by the fossil fuels that we are admitting they have no way to combat it so it is a double edged sword which is why I also say Do not create new ones complete and maintenance on the existing ones and use them.
All right guys that's all we have for today please remember that you can follow us on LinkedIn, Twitter, Reddit, YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, Anchor, Tik Tok and Snapchat and always remember that we are here have a great day!
