First up in this hour, Katie plays a fantastic new song by Archie Roach and Paul Kelly. Then, she calls up US correspondent Mark Blankenship in New York for this month’s chat, which is about musical theatre shows that have strong folk and/or roots music components. Katie suggested the topic because she recently saw the musical Come From Away in Melbourne and particularly enjoyed the score, which is heavily influenced by Newfoundland folk music. The discussion covers the shows Come From Away, Hair, Big River, Once, Bright Star and Hadestown. Here is the playlist:

Rally Round the Drum – Archie Roach ft. Paul Kelly
Frank Mills – Shelley Plimpton (from the Original Broadway Cast Recording of Hair)
Muddy Water – Daniel Jenkins & Ron Richardson (from the Original Broadway Cast Recording of Big River)
Falling Slowly – Kris Allen (song from Once)
Asheville – Hannah Elless & Ensemble (from the Original Broadway Cast Recording of Bright Star)
All I’ve Ever Known – Eva Noblezada & Reeve Carney (from the Original Broadway Cast Recording of Hadestown)

Mark Blankenship is a New York–based podcaster and writer who, among other things, co-hosts the podcast Mark and Sarah Talk About Songs (MASTAS) with Sarah D. Bunting; visit MASTAS’s Patreon page and follow the podcast on Facebook and Twitter. Find out about the iHeartRadio Showtune Countdown podcast here. You can also follow Mark on Twitter.
