Ronald DeFeo - lived at the house before the "haunting" had happened. Six members of the household were murdered and the house was sold in 1965 to the Lutz.
They moved in to the house and 8 months later they moved out. Why?
While they were there, a writer by the name of Jay Anson approached them about writing a novel based on the haunting of this house. Several years later, Ed and Lorraine Warren attached themselves to the story and tried to "exorcise" the house.
But, the true story is this. The Lutz's purchased the house after learning of the history what had happened there. They hired a writer (Jay) and sat down and came up with the story of the Amityville Horror. Basing it on "true" events and how the Lutz's had to deal with a haunted house.

The history is still interesting and the story, while made up, at the time was terrifying. The house in Amitville has been changed to keep away the looky-loos and tourists, but it still exists to this day and everyone that has lived at that house has never had an issue.
