There is something about Matthew 3:13-17 that makes you scratch your head. Jesus presents himself to be baptized. Why? Why would Jesus need to be baptized? He is holy without the slightest stain of sin. Why is Jesus here beneath the waters of baptism? Jesus’ presence has everything to do with his purpose in coming into our world—to put himself in our place, “to fulfill all righteousness,” to fulfill his mission for us.
