The Internal Revenue Service, citing unusual circumstances related to the pandemic, has extended the 2020 filing deadline for individuals to May 17. No late filing or late payment penalties will accrue between the original filing deadline of April 15 and the new deadline of May 17. If you still aren't able to file by May 17, you should file a Form 4868 Request for Extension by May 17. This gives taxpayers until October 15 to file, but it does not grant an extension of time to pay taxes. Taxpayers should pay their federal income tax due by May 17 to avoid penalties and interest. Most states have joined the federal government in also extending their deadlines, including Colorado. Quarterly estimate payments, corporate returns, and trust and estate returns were still due on April 15.
