Dementia is an umbrella term to describe a wide range of progressive neurological conditions. Although most people experiencing dementia are older, sometimes younger people are affected too.

Dr Etuini Ma’u was raised in Tonga where he completed the majority of his education and spent his senior years in New Zealand at Wesley College before studying medicine at the University of Auckland.

Dr Ma’u holds dual appointments as a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Psychological Medicine at the University of Auckland and Consultant Psychiatrist in Old Age Psychiatry at the Waikato District Health Board where he has been practicing for the past 10years.

He was awarded the HRC Pacific Clinical Research Training Fellowship in 2019 to undertake a PhD estimating the cost of dementia in New Zealand and modelling future costs and needs, with a focus on dementia prevention in Pacific communities.
