Hemp played a very significant role in the formation of the USA, and was an essential product for both sides of that conflict, comprising ropes, sales, and clothes, things that soldiers and sailors alike needed.  Later on, it was demonized as the devil's weed and was made illegal to grow and produce, until of course WWII drafted this remarkable plant back into action. People were encouraged to grow hemp for the war effort and grow they did.  Once the war was over, it returned to it's illegal status.

Over the past few years, that's changing in the US as more and more states are legalizing the growing of hemp for both medicinal and industrial purposes.

Slowly, but surely, hemp production in the US is ramping up.
