This week on #BlackArtistryMatters, a #MaxOutTime series, which examines Black talent and their inspiring work amid the pandemic: New York City Filmmaker and Director, Shawn Antoine II, discusses the artistic inspiration behind his films about Harlem, New York. The 2019 Hip Hop Film Festival “Best New Director” wrote, produced and directed “Showtime,” a short film about two Harlem teens who are approached by a recruiter for Julliard after she sees them dancing on the subway for money. Shawn tells many stories like these that accurately portray the city life and growing up in the hustle and bustle of the streets of New York. He is also working on more projects with New York storylines during the pandemic. We discussed Black filmmaking and directing, representation in film and making space at the table in entertainment.
