STORY 1: Reports of Mail Theft Continue out of Marietta Post Office

In Marietta, Georgia, multiple victims report thefts involving the Marietta Post Office, where checks sent through mailboxes were stolen, washed, and fraudulently cashed. Local businesses and individuals, including business owner Don Munns, suffered losses totaling nearly $30,000. Despite victims reporting the incidents, there is limited information on investigations, and agencies like the Marietta Police, Cobb Police, and Cobb Sheriff’s Office provide minimal details. The U.S. Post Office Inspector General stated that such behavior is not tolerated, but victims face challenges in recovering losses and obtaining information on arrests or investigations. The Marietta Daily Journal continues to investigate postal theft cases and encourages victims to come forward.

STORY 2: Marietta Board of Education Upholds Ban on 23 Books

The Marietta Board of Education in Georgia voted 6-1 to uphold the removal of 23 books from the district's high school library. The decision comes after a directive from Superintendent Grant Rivera to remove books with sexually explicit content, following similar removals by the Cobb School District. Over 500 pages of appeals were submitted by a group named Marietta in the Middle, urging the board to reconsider the bans, but the vote concludes the matter. Public comments expressed differing views on the removals, with some applauding the board for protecting children and others urging consideration for LGBTQ+ students.

STORY 3: North Cobb to Get New Career Center, New Elementary School Coming to South Cobb

The Cobb Board of Education is set to consider approving architects for a new career center in north Cobb and a new elementary school in south Cobb. Atlanta-based Collins Cooper Carusi Architects is chosen for the career center, with projected design costs of over $700,000. For the south Cobb elementary school, the district plans to work with Atlanta-based Cunningham Forehand Matthews & Moore Architects, with projected design costs of about $1.06 million. The district has not disclosed specific locations for the new buildings, but details are expected to be shared during the board meeting. Other agenda items include attendance zone adjustments and board appointments to the Facilities and Technology Citizens Oversight Committee.

STORY 4: 'Feet on the Ground': Marietta Parade Celebrates MLK's Legacy

A parade in downtown Marietta celebrated Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday, organized by the Cobb County Southern Christian Leadership Conference. Various participants, including Sheriff Craig Owens, the Osborne High School marching band, and community members, joined the event, showcasing unity and Black pride. Ben Williams, head of the Cobb SCLC, emphasized King's unifying vision for the "Beloved Community." Angela Orange, the sole Black member of the Marietta Board of Education, expressed hope and gratitude for King's legacy. The parade featured young participants, reflecting a commitment to King's vision among the next generation. The event aimed to celebrate community leaders and promote unity.

STORY 5: $70K Raised for Lassiter Student Injured in Wreck

An online crowdfunding page has been created for Chris Peixoto, a Lassiter High School junior injured in a Woodstock crash that killed two teenagers. Peixoto, a soccer player, survived the crash but requires multiple medical procedures and surgeries. The GoFundMe page, organized by teammate Emiliano Gonzalez, aims to raise $75,000 for Peixoto's medical expenses. The crash involved a Mazda 6 with five occupants and occurred on Towne Lake Parkway. Gabriel Escandon, 17, a Pope High School junior, and Esteban Cortez-Rendon, 18, of Woodstock, lost their lives. The Cherokee County Sheriff's Office cited speed as a contributing factor.
