Georgia Senate Committee Passes Antisemitism Bill

In a significant development, the Georgia state Senate committee has approved a revised version of legislation that defines antisemitism and includes it in the state's hate crimes law. This approval comes after an emotionally charged hearing featuring arguments both for and against the measure.

House Bill 30, which passed the Georgia House of Representatives last year but did not pass in the Senate, aims to incorporate the definition of antisemitism used by the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance into state law. The bill also provides additional penalties for crimes committed against Jewish victims.

The previous version of the bill was criticized for its ambiguity, leading to Senate President Pro Tempore John Kennedy, R-Macon, to champion this new, clearer version. “This substitute clearly sets out the government’s duties,” he said. “Agencies can rely on the definition to determine if antisemitism is present.”

Rep. John Carson, R-northeast Cobb, the House bill’s chief sponsor, underscored the urgent need for this legislation due to a significant increase in antisemitic incidents in Georgia.

The hearing prior to the vote saw speakers both supporting and opposing the bill, with Jewish Georgians on both sides. Critics expressed concerns that the legislation could be used to silence critics of Israel's actions in the Gaza Strip. However, supporters argued that the bill is necessary to address the increasing antisemitic violence in Georgia.

House Bill 30 will now proceed to the Senate Rules Committee, where it will be scheduled for a full Senate vote.
