On today’s episode, I’m talking to Assistant Professor of Athletic Training Dr. Kate Jochimsen about mentorship.

I’m especially excited to share this interview because Dr. Jochimsen is junior faculty, early in her career, but has so much wisdom and insight already. And it’s nice to hear from someone at this earlier stage as they are going through it all. Kate is an Assistant Professor and Director of Research for the Division of Athletic Training at West Virginia University’s School of Medicine. Kate was the first in her family to go to college, and then kept going - getting her Masters, PhD, and completing a post-doc, before taking her current academic position. Through all this, Kate is no stranger to the benefits of what good mentorship can do. She shares what to look for in a mentor, staying teachable, and the rewards of watching that relationship morph into collaborators.

We talk about:

The extra challenges faced by first-gen college students, like herself, who need to work a little harder to find out the next steps at each turn through their education.Reframing choices in our careers as opportunities that are neither good or bad, but just different. How being a successful academic means becoming comfortable with failure and learning to separate your worth from your work.
