Grambling Volleyball just let go of all of their athletes after new coach Chelsey Lucas has been hired. Players from her stops at Alcorn and University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff are giving similar stories. High schoolers who were given a scholarship are reportedly losing their opportunity as well. It’s a situation to definitely keep monitoring.
Virginia State just added 3 sports: Women’s soccer and men’s and women’s lacrosse. The new sports set them apart from the other teams in the CIAA. Not only that, VSU is unique from many D2 and HBCU schools. With these moves, VSU moves to 20 sports and one of the few HBCUs around the country to have these sports.
Janice Pettyjohn is the first woman ever to be hired by Howard University Football program full time. This is a huge move that I hope overtime is more of a regular occurrence than a historic event. Her story is just as amazing as the history she made. She only got into sports because kids don’t like to go home right after school. Starting off managing basketball in middle school and made it all the way to Howard as a graphic designer. It doesn’t seem like much of this was in the plan but sports kept coming back around.
