There's something special happening with the 2023 San Francisco Giants. With another dramatic come-from-behind win against the Padres last night, the SF Giants have firmly established themselves as a team that's capable of coming back to win games. The Giants looked dead in the water for much of the game, stymied by Padres starter Michael Wacha, but a coupe of solo homers and good pitching in the middle innings kept them in the game, and the Giants rallied for two in the ninth to tie and ended it on Mike Yastrzemski's three-run, walk-off home run into McCovey Cove.

Giants rookies have helped to revitalize this team, and they have their fingerprints all over last night's win. Patrick Bailey threw out Fernando Tatis Jr. trying to steal third with no outs in the first after his leadoff double. Bailey later had a huge sacrifice fly to tie the game in the ninth. Blake Sabol drew a huge leadoff walk to set up with two-run ninth. Luis Matos' sac fly moved Yaz to third and set up Bailey's game-tying sacrifice. Keaton Winn looked like a legitimate MLB starter, and Kevin Gausman impersonator, firing five innings of one-run ball out of the bullpen.

And finally, Giants manager Gabe Kapler played a large part in this win. He made aggressive pinch-hit decisions that ultimately paid off. He got J.D. Davis two plate appearances after he pinch hit for Crawford. He used a pinch hitter for a pinch hitter in the ninth, first bringing out Austin Slater to face a lefty before the Padres countermoved with a righty, before Kapler finally counter-countermoved with Blake Sabol, who led off with that key walk. And with the game tied in the top of the 10th, Kapler intentionally walked Juan Soto, a risky move putting another free runner on base, but it paid off as Camilo Doval was able to get out of the inning without allowing a run, setting up Yaz's dramatic walk-off cove shot in the bottom of the frame.
