Are the Giants having the worst offseason of any team?

On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick joins Locked On Diamondbacks host Millard Thomas to discuss the San Francisco Giants' offseason. Millard poses a shocking but thought-provoking question: Are the Giants having the worst offseason of any team in baseball? While Ben certainly does not agree, it's hard to argue with the fact that the Giants have lost some of their best players. Buster Posey retired. Kevin Gausman is a Blue Jay. Kris Bryant is a free agent.

While the Giants' rotation may have technically taken a step backward with Alex Cobb essentially replacing Gausman, Ben is happy with the front office's progress so far, bringing back Anthony DeSclafani and Alex Wood on multi-year deals, after both were quality contributors for San Francisco last year. Logan Webb broke out and emerged as a frontline starter, so overall it's a very solid-looking rotation at this moment in time. That being said, they need to do more. Ben thinks they need to add at least one more quality arm, and probably more.

On the position player side, Joey Bart is one of the top catching prospects in baseball, so there is some hope that the Giants have their catcher of the future on the doorstep of the majors. The Giants aren't likely to spend nine figures on anyone, reportedly, but there are several quality position players left who figure to command $50-99 million. Ben thinks the Giants have a lot of offseason left, and will ultimately field a team that will be competitive in 2022 without sacrificing future seasons.
