The Atlantic Coast Conference had its sights set on expanding by bringing in Stanford, Cal, and SMU, as the college sports landscape faced another round of conference realignment.

However, following discussions earlier in the week, the decision was made not to include the two Pac-12 institutions, which also led to a loss of momentum for adding SMU. Now, a few days later, we have the inside scoop on what transpired.

According to Matt Norlander, the expansion proposal fell short by just one vote due to four ACC teams opposing the move. North Carolina, NC State, Florida State, and Clemson were the teams that voted against it, while some others provided a more tentative approval.

For the ACC to proceed with the expansion, a 75% vote was required, meaning 12 out of the 15 teams, including Notre Dame, needed to be in favor of adding the new programs. As of now, it seems unlikely that the situation will change, and any shift in the stance of these teams appears doubtful.
