The College Football Playoff (CFP) initiated a process to expand the postseason to 12 teams for the 2024 and 2025 seasons, but will this hurt the Big 12 and help the Pac-12? Recently, this expansion reached a resolution as the CFP officially announced the expansion. However, the journey towards this decision faced challenges that began in the fall, when the 11 presidents and chancellors forming the CFP's board of managers took control and voted to expand to 12 teams in 2026. They urged the 10 FBS commissioners and Notre Dame's athletic director, Jack Swarbrick, to find a way to make the expansion possible by the 2024 season.

The critical moment in reaching an agreement involved the Rose Bowl, a storied and traditional bowl, which had requested the CFP to guarantee its traditional New Year's Day time slot at 2 p.m. PT in the next contract starting in 2026. Fortunately, an agreement was eventually reached, with the Rose Bowl agreeing to relinquish its request for the time slot in years when it would also host a CFP semifinal. This paved the way for the CFP's expansion to 12 teams before the current contract expired after the 2025 season.

The role of the Rose Bowl in this process was crucial, as unanimous agreement from all parties was necessary for the expansion to proceed. The discussions revolved around maintaining the Rose Bowl's exclusive broadcast window, which holds significant value in college sports. In return for hosting a quarterfinal game in 2024 and 2025, the Rose Bowl sought assurances about its time slot in the new contract.
