Bob Huggins, the head coach of the West Virginia Mountaineers, has been suspended for the first three games of the 2023-24 season, and his salary has been reduced by $1 million annually. Huggins has also been ordered to undergo sensitivity training after he used an anti-gay slur during an appearance on a Cincinnati radio station, jeopardizing his job. The incident occurred after longtime Cincinnati radio host Bill Cunningham and former Huggins assistant coach Steve Moeller got Huggins on the phone. Cunningham asked Huggins about Xavier University, his rival when he was the head coach at Cincinnati from 1989-2005. Huggins responded by describing Xavier fans throwing “rubber penises on the floor” during a Crosstown Shootout game against Cincinnati. Cunningham then asked if that happened on “transgender night?” to which Huggins responded with the offensive language.
Huggins has since released an apology statement admitting to using “a completely insensitive and abhorrent phrase” and described himself as “ashamed and embarrassed and heartbroken.” West Virginia’s athletic department released a statement of its own describing Huggins’ remarks as “insensitive” and “offensive” and saying the matter was “under review.” In a joint statement, West Virginia president Gordon Gee and athletic director Wren Baker made it clear to Huggins "that any incidents of similar derogatory and offensive language will result in immediate termination."
