Will the Colorado Avalanche have the ability to make meaningful trades? Where do Newhook and Ranta fit? Three stars of last week.

Jonas Johansson is not a long term solution for the Colorado Avalanche, but they got him for a reason. To give Philipp Grubauer a much needed rest from time to time. The Avs need Grubauer as healthy as possible for a deep playoff run and the best way to do that is spell him every so often. Johansson can do that, and he might get handed the keys to the car more often, at least for this week if he can perform serviceably. They are not expecting miracles from Johansson, but they are expecting him to hold his head above water.

Two highly touted prospects could be on their way to Colorado. Alex Newhook and Sampo Ranta both saw their college seasons end and while both could theoretically return to college, neither is expected to. The question is, where do they go? The AHL Colorado Eagles or to the Avs. The Eagles is the likely destination but if the Avs were in need of forwards, do they turn to either one of these guys to fill a role?

The Avs are also thin at draft picks for next year. So making a deal for an impact player in exchange for draft picks might prove difficult. Which is why bringing in Newhook and Ranta could act as the Avs deadline moves.
