Greetings and welcome :)

I hope you had a productive strong Afrikan week.

This week I want to talk about the whole racist ‘Go Back to Afrika’ narrative … because … well … I did just that and went back to Afrika … and it’s great … but more importantly … because a digital media organisation called Black and Abroad … has had enough of this racist behaviour and has begun a mission and an online project to totally redefine … what it means when someone says ‘Go Back to Afrika’ … and to also totally transform the impact this statement has on Afrikan people … and I think this is so great … that I wanted to talk about it today off the back of last week’s podcast about Ghana and the 2019 Year of Return to Afrika.

However … the Black and Abroad Travel company has flipped the whole nasty narrative on its head … using a pan-Afrikan driven campaign to challenge our understanding of what Back to Afrika should mean to us when we hear it.

Their website says

As a brand dedicated to redefining experiences for the modern Black traveler, we want to end that hate. So we are reclaiming the phrase “Go Back To Africa.” It’s a pan-African tourism campaign – for every country in Africa – designed to reframe the story.

The campaign is also designed to flood the Internet with positive images of and ideas about African traveling in Africa so we can see ourselves there and maybe get inspired to go to a particular Afrikan country. Not because someone told us to go in a racist comment ... but because at its core, going back to Africa can be an amazing experience.

I hope you enjoy this podcast episode and whilst you’re here, why not click on the links below and take a look at the Black & Abroad website.

If you’re planning your own ‘Go Back to Afrika’ trip … I would love to hear from you.  I would love to hear your experiences.

Remember … you can also subscribe to the podcast wherever you’re listening to the show … so you don’t miss a beat.  Why not leave me a review?  … I would love to know your views about the podcast.

Bye for now.

Dr Asher
