FROM GOLF PASS:

Golfers love a good challenge.

Whether a good player or just a weekend hack, we all want to feel like we've accomplished something when we walk off the golf course, whether that's beating our handicap, crushing our buddies for a few bucks or having the round of a lifetime.

Not all of us play serious competitive golf, but we all can play serious tournament venues to gauge the state of our game. We've spent extensive hours researching our latest Top 100 list: America's top 100 tournament golf courses you can play.

We wanted to identify the best of the best out of the thousands of U.S. courses that host state and local tournaments and hundreds of college courses that hold competitions, too.

We examined the tournament histories of America's best public and resort courses to determine our rankings. We analyzed courses that have hosted professional golf tournaments from the PGA TOUR, PGA TOUR Champions, Korn Ferry Tour, LPGA Tour and Epson Tour to United States Golf Association and PGA of America championships. Even Division I college tournaments - nationals, regionals and conference tournaments, plus long-time events - and state PGA professional and elite junior tournaments factored into our equation.

In ranking each course, we tried to balance its tournament pedigree against the course's difficulty and critical acclaim. Much of the list is a who's-who of playing where the pros play, although we made sure to sprinkle in high-profile venues for big amateur championships as well.
